Flight periods of aquatic insects from a Hong Kong forest stream i. Macronematinae (Hydropsychidae) and stenopsychidae (Trichoptera)

Title: Flight periods of aquatic insects from a Hong Kong forest stream i. Macronematinae (Hydropsychidae) and stenopsychidae (Trichoptera)
Author: Dudgeon, David
Appeared in: Aquatic insects
Paging: Volume 10 (1988) nr. 2 pages 61-68
Year: 1988
Contents: The flight periods and direction of flight of Stenopsyche angustata (Stenopsychidae), Macrostemum fastosum, M. lautum and Polymorphanisus astictus (Macronematinae: Hydropsychidae) were investigated from May 1983 to June 1984. Light trap catches indicated that S. angustata adults were present throughout the year, whilst Macronematinae were most numerous in May and June and were not recorded during autumn and winter. Temperature may determine the flight period of Macronematinae in Hong Kong's seasonal tropical climate, but timing of emergence to reduce mortality of late-instar larvae and pupae during wet season spates would produce the same temporal pattern. Female M. fastosum were more numerous than males in light trap catches, apparently reflecting the shorter adult life expectancy of males. M. fastosum, P. astictus and S. angustata tended to fly upstream; however upstream flights by females was apparent for M. fastosum only and this species alone conformed to the colonization cycle prediction of compensatory upstream flight.
