Twenty-three professional environmental education organizations, representing 73 nations, prepared and endorsed a joint statement in Johannesburg, South Africa, during the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), giving one voice to global efforts to establish the field of environmental education and make it a mainstream part of curricula everywhere. Initially, this historical gathering called for the representatives to meet and discuss whether they wanted to establish a network and issue a statement at the summit. The discourse of the meeting quickly went beyond asking for more funding and creating more small projects to the necessity of joining together to achieve the shift in practices and attitudes necessary for sustainable development. |
