In 1993, the Nicaraguan government mandated that environmental education be addressed through national- and departmental-level programs. To develop baseline data for programs in the Carazo Department, a researcher from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point worked in cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (MARENA) to conduct a “rapid assessment for environmental education.” The study, intended as a model to help other departments devise environmental education programs, used multiple research techniques (in-depth interviews, surveys, and primary and secondary source reviews) to look at current environmental education initiatives, needs, funding sources, and critical issues of interest.
