This paper examines the disposals of plant and machinery by manufacturing industry in the UK from 1959-79. Disposals reflect relative costs as well as the effects of changing demand and liquidity levels. This is first investigated for the aggregate case of total manufacturing. Reasons are advanced for why different behaviour might be expected for concentrated and nonconcentrated industries and separate sets of results are presented for each of these cases, which are then contrasted. |
