  Operationalizing discourse therapy

Title: Operationalizing discourse therapy
Author: Togher, Leanne
Appeared in: Aphasiology
Paging: Volume 11 (1997) nr. 6 pages 621-625
Year: 1997-06-01
Contents: Over the past 10 years the assessment of discourse deficits in the closed-head injury (CHI) and mild stroke populations has received increasing attention. This has been largely for two reasons : because traditional assessments fail to tap 'high-level' language impairments, and as a result of clinicians' desire to address communication difficulties from a more functional perspective. The criticism of the 'functional' approach, however, is that it may lack rigour in its examination of the contributing factors to the communication impairment. Functional scales tend to examine a practical situation, such as shopping or banking with a checklist of performance on component skills, such as completing forms or making an enquiry satisfactorily. The move towards functionalism has been an important one for the field of speech pathology. The challenge now is to operationalize the functional perspective so that we are better able to take into account the underlying factors which account for failure in practical situations.
