The Memory Controllability Inventory (MCI) was developed to assess beliefs about memory ability and the controllability of memory. the four subscales are: Present Ability, Potential Improvement, Effort Utility, and Inevitable Decrement. Factor structure, reliability and validity were evaluated with three samples of adults. MCI scores were related to depression, problem-solving resourcefulness, and memory performance in the expected directions. Possible uses of the MCI for research and intervention are discussed.
