Inhoud: Xhosa and Zulu show some differences in their concords. Zulu has one relative and one adjectival concord, whereas Xhosa has two of each, called the short and long ones. The latter are identical with the Zulu concords and are composite forms. Their first element consists of a formative a which indicates the relative connection. The second element consists in one case of the verbal concords, in the other of concords identical with the nominal prefixes proper, which two types are at the base of all concords in Bantu. The relative formative a-is originally the same as the article which was repeated concordially, as is still done in Xhosa, which uses it only after antecedents which have the article. Zulu has lost this distinction. Therefore it has only one relative and one adjectival concord. — There is no need for a special “enumerative concord” in Xhosa. The Zulu enumerative concord is identical with the short adjectival concord in Xhosa.
