Author: Nielsen, Jens Petter

Paging: Volume 9 (1992) nr. 1 pages 19-37
Year: 1992
Contents: What was the role played by Nordic-Scandinavian ethnic elements in the political and cultural creation of the ancient Russian state, and its early development? This is the core of “the Norman question” in Soviet historiography, which i.a. relates to the sources mentioning of both the “Rus'” and the “Varangians” as being instrumental in the making of the ancient Kiev state. -This article analyses the concept of 'normannism' in the light of the various historical conceptions and positions held by Russian and Soviet scholars, and offers an operationalization of the concept. - Thus the historiographical debate may be viewed as an example of how questions related to 'national identity' is discussed in historical terms.
