This article intends to demonstrate the relationship between particular events in the past as they are recollected in the memories of informants in a coastal community in North Norway, and the changes that they signify both in the mutual ascriptions of identities and in the distribution of important assets. These changes in turn affect structural aspects of the community. The main argument is that recollections of the past often present us with local interpretations of causal connections which are also metamessages about how people see their present relations to each other and how they conceive their community as a collective entity related to the outside world. Underlying their understanding of changes in their past are thus also legitimations of basic value orientations concerning equality and difference in the present. |
