Titel: Red sandstone and Greenlandic wool. Two diagnostic artefacts in the interpretation of a newly discovered Saeter in southern Greenland

Jaar: 1998
Inhoud: This article presents a current excavation of a group of stone structures in a scree area at the entrance to Kirkespirsdalen in southwest Greenland, a site which was originally interpreted as an Inuit camp for caribou hunting but which upon investigation has been reinterpreted as a medieval times saeter (shieling). An account is given of why the original interpretation of the structure as a site for caribou hunting must be reevaluated, and indications that the site is Norse are presented. Among other things reference is made to the construction and form of the structures and to finds of Gardar sandstone and a piece of woollen textile. It is noted that there is evidence of saeter operations in Scandinavia as well as on the North Atlantic islands during the medieval times, and it is emphasized that medieval farmers would probably have utilized all available resources, bearing in mind that Greenland must be considered a marginal area as regards agriculture. Animal husbandry and milk production were important components in the economy of Norse Greenland. There is evidence of saeter operations at other places in the Norse Eastern Settlement, but the site in Kirkespirsdalen is the first one that has been excavated.
