The role of the horizontal dimension in Greenlandic archaeology is discussed, and reconnaissance results form Qeqertarsuup Tunua (Disko Bay) are presented in a discussion of Palaeo-Eskimo site location. Dorset dwelling styles are exemplified by a presentation of data from two newly excavated sites and it is suggested that the Palaeo-Eskimo habitations in the research area generally can be perceived as “winter” and “summer” dwellings. Comparing the West Greenland evidence to the dwelling styles of North East Greenland, it is questioned why the “winter type” settlements apparently are lacking in Peary Land, and it is questioned whether our present understanding of the Independence I and II Cultures is viable. |
