During the l6th and 17th centuries, the Sea Saami population of Kvænangen was organized in siida societies with common access to land and sea. Specialized reindeer nomadism had not yet developed; people exploited resources through fishing and hunting. In addition, they kept small flocks of sheep, cows and reindeer. But throughout the 18th century, these people experienced definitive changes as the royal authorities launched an economic, judicial and ideological offensive. From 1716 onward, missionary campaigns were initiated. During the following years, the division of land into private properties was also introduced. Simultaneously, the Saami experienced a large growth in population; from 1740 to 1800 their numbers tripled. The significance of the different factors involved in these processes will be evaluated. The main question to be raised is to what extent these changes can tell us something about women's position in earlier Saami societies.
