Two Epochs of Norwegian-Russian trade relations: From symmetry to asymmetry

Titel: Two Epochs of Norwegian-Russian trade relations: From symmetry to asymmetry
Auteur: Thuen, Trond
Verschenen in: Acta borealia
Paginering: Jaargang 10 (1993) nr. 2 pagina's 3-18
Jaar: 1993
Inhoud: This article addresses the trade relationship between Northern Norway and Northwest Russia as it unfolded during two different epochs: the original Pomor trade from the 17th century until 1919, and the much shorter period in 1992 when visiting Russian 'trader-tourists' sold petty commodities on the streets of North Norwegian towns. A comparison is made in terms of the significance of the commodities characterizing the two epochs; they reflected a balanced or symmetric relationship of complementary needs and supplies during the first epoch, and a biased or asymmetric relationship during the second, primarily due to the lack of confidence in eastern currencies. Under the cover of the petty commodity market, illegal deals were made which eventually led to the end of this market trading. However, it seems to survive in another form, namely as the festival-inspired 'reinvention of tradition' type of tourist attraction so typical of post-industrial modern Norway.
