Inhoud: The geographical distribution of chromium (Cr) concentrations in soil and winter wheat grain cultivated in the vicinity of a ferrochrome smelter at Vargon in south-western Sweden was investigated. The mean Cr concentration in soil was about 50% higher in the study area than the Swedish average. Continuous Cr surfaces were produced by trend surface analysis combined with ordinary kriging. The former method reveals general trends and the latter deals with local deviation from an average surface. While the present Cr concentration in grains reflects the Cr deposition pattern, the spatial distribution of Cr in soil seems to be influenced by earlier industrial activity. The flux of Cr in the sampled fields was assessed using map algebra; the annual input was in the range of 190-240 g ha-1 and the removal by harvests was in the order of 0.6-1.2 g ha-1. The study area is regarded as one of the most Cr-polluted districts in Sweden, but 10-30% of the Cr input was seen to derive from fertilizers. The use of spatial statistical techniques and raster-based geographical information systems can be of great help in work to control the use of heavy metals and in decision-making on efficient measures to create a balance between the input and removal of heavy metals.
