The effects of MCPA (2 and 4 kg a.i./ha) and dichlorprop (4 and 8 kg a.i./ha) on dry matter (DM) yield, forage quality and herbicide residues were evaluated in Dactylis glomerata, Festuca pratensis, Phleum pratense and Poa pratensis. The experiments were conducted under very dry conditions with almost no rain during the two experimental periods. The effects of the herbicides on yields and forage quality varied between years. Herbicide treatment caused reduced DM yields in one of two experimental years, and P. pratense showed the greatest reduction. During one of the years, water soluble carbohydrate content decreased, whereas crude protein and fibre fractions increased following herbicide treatment. As a result of the very dry growth conditions and high rates of herbicides, high amounts of herbicide residues were found in both years. With the exception of P. pratense it should not be necessary to take the effects of MCPA and dichlorprop on yield and forage quality into account during dry growth conditions. However, dry conditions will probably result in high levels of herbicide residues in the forage.
