The gliadin, low and high molecular weight (LMW and HMW) glutenin subunit alleles at Gli-1, Glu-3 and Glu-1 loci in the Finnish spring wheat cultivars and in the advanced breeding lines are described using electrophoretic separations. The most frequent HMW glutenin subunit alleles were a (1) and b (2*) at 1A, b (7 + 8) and c (7 + 9) at 1B and d (5 + 10) at 1D in both wheat groups. The most frequent gliadin and LMW glutenin subunit Gli-1, Glu-3 allele pair was b,b at 1B and a,a at 1D in the both wheat groups and m,e at 1A in the cultivars and o,d at 1A in the breeding lines. Several Gli-1, Glu-3 allele pairs that were rare among the Finnish cultivars were found among the breeding lines. This reflected the new genetic material used in the crosses. However, the variation of Gli-1, Glu-3 allele pairs remained low in the cultivars; the recently released cultivars contained nearly the same Gli-1, Glu-3 allele pairs as the cultivars released earlier in Finland.
