Variety-by-year interaction effects were analysed within zones that for adapted varieties are nearly free of variety-by-location interaction effects. The interaction was found to be of significance for the interpretation of results of timothy variety trials. Effects of the year of establishment and variety-specific effects of age of sward were found to be of little importance, whereas certain years may contribute much to the V × Y interaction. The residuals on a plot were serially correlated between years and the autocorrelations for lag 1 were on average 0.16. The consequences of these findings for the design of experimental series are discussed, and the need for repetition of variety trials over time is emphasized. |
