Titel: Maize Response to Urea and Superphosphate in Pot Experiment with Soils Derived from Alley Cropping

Inhoud: A pot culture experiment was conducted to evaluate the urea and single superphosphate (SSP) fertilizer requirements of maize (Zea mays L.) using soils collected from a three-year-old agroforestry plot in the Southern Guinea Savanna Zone of Nigeria. The agroforestry plot carried various combinations ranging from mixed silviculture hedgerows of Leucaena and Gmelina and Parkia and Gmelina to single hedgerow tree species of either Leucaena, or Parkia or Gmelina. Maize had also been grown for four cropping seasons in the alleys provided by the various hedgerow tree species before this investigation. Although soils from all the various combinations would require some urea and SSP fertilizer for optimal maize production, the degree varies. Maize responded more to N and P on soils from the Parkia-based cropping system than on soils from Leucaena's. Nitrogen and P reduced the number of days to tasselling and silking in maize. The paper advocates the integration of mixed silviculture of Leucaena, Parkia and Gmelina into maize cropping systems in the agro-ecosystem.
