Begonia × cheimantha Everett was grown under different temperature treatments from the end of short-day treatment until mid-December. Plants from the treatment with a positive temperature difference (DIF) (22°/16°C, day/night) developed taller foliage and wider and higher inflorescences than plants from treatments with constant day and night temperature (19°C), with negative DIF (16°/22°C) and with temperature drops for 4h early in the dark period, late in the dark period and early in the light period (14°/20°C). The most compact plants occurred under the negative DIF treatment, whereas plants from the regime with a drop early in the light period were evaluated to be of highest quality at marketing stage (10 open flowers). The latter treatment is recommended in short culture programmes for Christmas begonia. |
