The study was designed to measure the effect of low-vigour and high-vigour spring wheat seeds (Cv. Heta) on grain yield and grain N yield under short season, northern growing conditions. Low vigour seed significantly restricted yield formation and grain N yield under early summer drought. The results indicate that the immediate effect of low vigour seed on yield reduction can be obviated by grading seed prior to sowing to ensure plump grains and high kernel weight in seeds matured under favourable growing conditions, but by grading smaller kernels in poor-vigour seeds where dormancy has not necessarily broken in large kernels as a consequence of maturing under unfavourable growing conditions. Protein concentration and protein composition were not good indicators of seed vigour. In a good growing season, N fertilization was an efficient way of reducing the negative impact of poor-vigour seed on subsequent wheat grain N yield. |
