The ripening of the pear cultivar 'Clara Frijs' through the harvest period and the influence of maturity at harvest on storage life and eating quality were studied. The influence of different controlled atmosphere storage (CA-storage) conditions on wastage and eating quality was examined. Fruit size and firmness as well as the amounts of soluble solids, starch and citric acid were found to be valuable means for an evaluation of maturity at harvest and subsequent storability and eating quality. The harvest index defined as firmness/(soluble solids x starch content) proved to be applicable for this purpose. Late-picked 'Clara Frijs' stored under CA conditions had a better eating quality but a higher incidence of disorders, especially CO2-damage. The best CA-storage conditions, at which the pears had a reasonable quality after 10 weeks of storage, was found to be 0°C, 95-97% RH, 2-5% O2 and 0.1% CO2. |
