In controlled pollinations of Cox's Orange and some other cultivars no indications of incompatibility between ornamental and dessert cultivars of Malus were found. In order to compare flowering time the proportions of flowers at the stages bud, open and petal fall were used to rank earliness of flowering within a number of cultivars. Three field trials with ornamental apples to pollinate the apple cultivars Cox's Orange, Katja and Mio resulted in a positive influence of the best ornamentals on yield efficiency. Control plots without a pollen donor had the lowest yield efficiency. At least two different ornamental cultivars which differ in flowering time should be found within the space required by a stationary pollinizer tree. |
