Dieffenbachia maculata, Rosa hybrida and Saintpaulia ionantha were grown in a greenhouse under mobile shade. The set point for closing and opening of the shading screens was 350 W m-2. Three levels of shade (64, 76 and 84%) were established when the shading screens were closed; with the screens open the irradiance in the greenhouse was 48% of the outdoor irradiance. Increasing shade resulted in a decrease in the number of shoots and dry weight per pot of Dieffenbachia maculata. Plant height was increased with increasing shade for Rosa hybrida, but the number of inflorescences and flower buds decreased. Time to flowering was increased with increasing shade for Rosa hybrida and decreased for Saintpaulia ionantha. The leaf colour of Saintpaulia ionantha was affected by shade and only under the highest shade level was the leaf colour acceptable commercially. |
