Inhoud: Coastal exposure of volcanic rocks south of Evans Head, northeastern New South Wales, comprises alkaline basalt and andesite. The basalt is massive and columnar jointed and coherent andesite includes massive and banded varieties overlain by andesitic hyaloclastite. The hyaloclastite comprises a basal In situ breccia fades with a feeder dyke system overlain by redeposited breccia facies. Based on local stratigraphy and regional context, the andesitic and basaltic volcanic rocks are here correlated with the Middle-Late Triassic Chillingham Volcanics. Most of the rocks are significantly altered, however, dating of plagioclase by K-Ar gave a minimum age of earliest Cretaceous (141 ± 1 Ma). It is inferred that the K-Ar age has been affected by alteration and/or thermal influences of the Late Jurassic to mid-Cretaceous extension which formed the now offshore Yamba Trough 5 km southeast of the field area. These volcanic rocks were previously interpreted as a combination of Tertiary basalt and Palaeozoic andesite.
