Stromatolites are common in the Skates Hills Formation of the Savory Basin and are of significance for interregional correlation. The (previously tentative) identification of Acaciella australica (Howchin 1914) Walter 1972 can now be confirmed, and Basisphaera irregularis Walter 1972 is recorded for the first time. The identification of these forms supports correlation of the Skates Hills Formation with the Bitter Springs Formation and other units of Supersequence 1 in the Centralian Superbasin, and indicates a Neoproterozoic age for the Savory Basin succession. A review of the scattered records of the occurrence of Acaciella australica, both in the literature and in unpublished reports, demonstrates the widespread occurrence of this form and its significance for correlation of Neoproterozoic successions. |
