Inhoud: The dominantly quartzitic Mt Narryer sedimentary sequence is chemically diverse, consistent with deposition in a high-energy continental environment. The dominant sediment source was stable continental crust with crustal residence ages (Sm-Nd TDM) of 3.3-3.8 Ga. This hinterland had 'typical post-Archaean' characteristics such as negative Eu anomalies which were probably generated prior to 3.3 Ga. The succession has higher Sm/Nd than is common for younger sedimentary sequences, suggesting a higher proportion of mafic or anorthositic crust than is seen in the present outcrop around Mt Narryer. Internal Sm-Nd isochrons for two samples confirm the timing of upper amphibolite-granulite facies metamorphism at 2700 ± 100 Ma, probably ca 400 Ma after deposition. The small sedimentary unit which has given published detrital zircon ages >4 Ga is an atypical member of the sequence. It has high 147Sm/144Nd (0.145) and the TDM = 4.5 Ga is therefore equivocal, but it supports the view that remnants of >4 Ga crust existed when the Mt Narryer sedimentary sequence was deposited.
