Geophysical-structural analysis of the mid-Proterozoic Eastern Creek Volcanics of the Mt Isa region has supported the proposition that exposures within or adjacent to the Mt Isa Fault Zone are part of a folded thrust detachment and not simple fault blocks. This structural style, with dislocations, has been established in detail over a strike length of 25 km. Alteration effects have modified the physical properties of the volcanic rocks and can be resolved in concealed members at depths >2 km. Mineralization is associated with such sites and this correlation, with a capacity to resolve hidden alteration, has exploration significance irrespective of ideas about the origin of the mineralization or alteration. Extraction of structural and rock property information at geologically complex sites requires integrated 3D analysis of gravity and magnetic data, together with definition of 'normal' rock properties for all units. The volume of altered rock defined near Mt Isa Mine is consistent with chemically based estimates required to account for the Mt Isa ore bodies. |
