Inhoud: The presence of round quartz grains and small cobbles in surficial sands suggests that fluvial activity has been a significant contributor to the distribution pattern of sandy soils on the deeply weathered plateau of southwestern Australia. Areas of these sands often occur as fragmented elements of a valley system that is antecedent to the present integrated system. They have been deeply weathered since emplacement, resulting in partial dissolution and fracturing of quartz grains. This postdepositional alteration can in part explain the poor grain size sorting and the predominance of angular grains in the sand masses, which might originally have consisted of well sorted rounded grains characteristic of sediment transported from a distant source. Very sandy laterite duricrusts associated with the sands show continuity with laterite duricrusts which conform to an undulating terrain formed on Precambrian igneous rocks. It is probable that the landscape in which these sands were emplaced was originally of significant relief and has been deeply weathered.
