Broad igneous contact aureoles and isolated thermal highs are developed in deformed early Permian formations of the south-eastern part of the New England Fold Belt, near Willi Willi, NSW. Typical resultant mineral assemblages of quartz-biotite-muscovite-cordierite-(pyrrhotite) in pelitic rocks and quartz-diopside-wollastonite-grossular-vesuvianite in calcareous rocks indicate a peak of static prograde metamorphism at upper hornblende hornfels facies, with 7 up to 550°C, P = 1 kb and XCO2 <0.10. Partial retrogression followed and at one locality a late stage hedenbergite-fluorite-stannian-andradite skarn formed at the base of the Yessabah Limestone accompanied by Cu-Ag-Sn sulphide mineralization. The thermal metamorphism and mineralization are attributed to granitic plutons at shallow depth, belonging to a large batholith of which only highest levels are exposed. |
