The Barrington shield volcano was erupted about 50 Ma ago onto a low relief surface with a few upstanding granite hills. Considerable erosion, associated with retreat of the Great Escarpment, has left about one third of the former cover of basalt. Benches formed at the contact between the basalt and the underlying surface indicate that the basalt is retreating faster than the Palaeozoic rocks in the area, and also allow the pre-basalt surface to be reconstructed. There is little indication of cyclic development of landforms in the Barrington Tops area during the Cainozoic. Instead, the evidence points to pre-basalt planation, volcanism, uplift and scarp retreat, each as a phase in the geomorphological evolution of this part of the Eastern Highlands of Australia. |
