During a lake-full phase at the end of the Pleistocene Period, lacustrine silts and aeolian sands were deposited around the eastern margins of Kow Swamp. These sediments have yielded the remains of a large population of early Australian man, retaining certain archaic Homo erectus characteristics. The lake-lunette system in which the burials were made provides a geographically isolated situation for the examination of late Pleistocene and Holocene hydrological changes which have left their imprint on the sediments, soils and vegetation. |
