Inhoud: Phosphate Hill is a small inlier of Ordovician rocks enclosed in an envelope of ?Lower Devonian quartzose sandstones and shales. Lithological layering (S0) within the Ordovician inlier shows tight B1 folds with a second group of folds (B2) superimposed. The orientation and shape of these B2 folds are highly variable. The overall structure of the area falls naturally into two subareas: Subarea 1 comprises sub-horizontal east-west B1 folds which are overturned to the north and show slides on their lower limbs; B2 folds in this subarea are small-scale features. Subarea 2 is dominated by B2 folds and contains a large S-shaped B2 fold in its eastern part. The variability of axial orientation characteristic of B2 folds is believed to be caused by the combined effects of two factors: The variation of the imposed strain field (relative to S0), owing to the inherent characteristics of an incipient shear-zone style of strain. 2. The internal rotation of S0 relatively to externally imposed axes of bulk strain. 3. Continued rotation of S0, subsequently to the formation of divergent parasitic B2 folds, results in variable orientation of B2 axial planes, S2.
