A spinner magnetometer has been used to determine the fabric of susceptibility anisotropy within the Moruya Granite. Magnet foliation planes are generally parallel to the granite contact and dip away from the centre of the intrusion. Recent magnetic susceptibility studies of dykes and lava flows have indicated that, in general, the long axes of particles align normal to the direction of Newtonian fluid flow. Accordingly, it may be possible to distinguish plastic from fluid flow features in igneous intrusions depending on whether the maximum principal susceptibility axes are normal to, or parallel with, the inferred flow direction. The Moruya Granite is considered in the light of these results. It has probably been diapirically emplaced in a plastic state, a conclusion consistent with recent work on the mode of emplacement of medium to high level granites. |
