This paper describes the gravimetric investigations of the Sternberg State Astronomical Institute in Antarctica. On the basis of data from gravimetry and other geophysical methods, it has been possible to construct a picture of the rock basement of Antarctica, the nature of the gravitational field, and the thickness of the Earth's crust and isostatic equilibrium in that area. The important features of the structure of East and West Antarctica are noted. The former possesses the characteristic features of a stable continent, whereas the latter constitutes an intermediate stage between a continent and a group of islands. |
