This paper examines two historical examples of public attacks by the conservative Bulletin magazine on Australian social wok the 1961 assault on an alleged communist conspiracy in the Melbourne University Social Studies Department, and the 1981 critique of alleged marxist influence within the University of Sydney Social Work Department. Attention is drawn both to the short-term impact of these attacks on the social work profession and its commitment to social reform, and to their implications for current policy and practice. |
