A number of important considerations for direct social work practice with women prisoners are presented in this paper. Challenges posed by working in a secure prison environment are discussed followed by key issues for thorough assessment and intervention. Continuity of care across prison and community is a crucial component of effective service delivery. Social workers have an important role in advocating for improved services for women, both within prison and in the community. A greater range of sentencing options is needed to reduce the alarming increase in the number of women prisoners in recent years. |
