This article takes up the challenge posed by Dorothy Scott (1997) to social workers who are also researchers. Scott suggests that it is only by engaging in discussion about the ethical dilemmas which confront researchers with a practice background that we are able to reflect critically on the application of ethics in field-work. Often the dilemmas that confront researchers in the field are not specifically covered by the AASW Code of Ethics. They are also issues which often present suddenly and require immediate response. In such cases, ethical dilemmas are not always easy to identify, and not always easy to respond to within any clear framework How these ethical dilemmas are negotiated in the real world, and the importance of reflection in naming and understanding these dilemmas is the focus of this article. |
