This study looks at how social workers conceptualise discrimination through the way they talk or write about what discrimination means in practice. Two issues for social work emerging from this study are discussed. First, discrimination arising as a direct result of social work intervention is identified and described, introducing the notion of 'meta-discrimination'. Secondly, the use of humour about service users, as a mechanism for dealing with workers' stress is discussed and potential problems for practice are identified. A theme uniting these aspects of practice is the use of reflective practice as a regulator of discriminatory tendencies for the individual social worker. A second theme, the notion of 'meta-discrimination', is proposed here as an issue for the profession to consider. |
