A group of twenty women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had subsequently undergone a mastectomy and breast reconstruction participated in a study regarding their experience of these processes. Qualitative research method was used. The aim of the interview was to identify the emotional and social support needs and experiences of these women at selected points throughout the treatment phases, and to ascertain what they now felt the impact of the whole experience had been on their well-being. This paper explores one of the themes to emerge: the importance of perceived social and emotional support and its absence at particular points. This matter is explored through the womens experiences and comments. Suggestions for constructive social work and other interventions are made. |
