This paper documents the experience of community health workers who, in their endeavours to help an aged alcohol dependent person, needed to become familiar with the processes of: the New South Wales Inebriates Act (1912), the New South Wales Mental Health Act (1990)and the Guardianship Board processes. It takes a realistic approach to the application of these three processes as applied to the individual concerned. It looks at recommendations formulated to address the deficiencies in the supporting structures of these processes and the difficulties faced by families and workers involved with individuals who are affected by substance abuse. |
