The existence of poverty in the midst of affluence is a paradox. However, the evidence suggests that poverty can be alleviated. This paper discusses the results of a survey relating to a feasibility study for poverty alleviation. Those who live in conditions of poverty are of the view that poverty exists due to structural and personal failings. Persistent poverty affects their personality, hope, confidence, beliefs, attitudes and self esteem, and develops dependency on services. Further, it hinders social and economic participation by individuals and families in community life. More awareness of existing programs and the enhancement of their effectiveness are needed. Poverty can be overcome by introducing changes at structural, local and personal levels. The implications of these results for social work education and practice are discussed.
