This paper examines the use of the AASW Code of Ethics Procedures for investigating complaints of unethical or inappropriate behaviour by social workers. An outline of the experiences in using the Code procedures by the AASW Victorian Ethics Committee is presented, along with an analysis of the strengths and limitations of the code, and of codes generally. The need for such codes to afford due process and fairness dimensions is discussed, and the AASW investigation process is considered in the light of developments in other merit review processes and the critique of administrative review which is currently being undertaken across Australia. |
