Arguing for a social work role in the promotion of ethical social research

Titel: Arguing for a social work role in the promotion of ethical social research
Auteur: Blaskett, Beverley
Verschenen in: Australian social work
Paginering: Jaargang 51 (1998) nr. 4 pagina's 19-25
Jaar: 1998-12-01
Inhoud: This article argues that Research Ethics Committees should constitute a new field for social work practice and enquiry. Each committee reviews research proposals which involve participation by human subjects. The National Health and Medical Research Council sets out broad guidelines which each committee follows in the determination process. Originating from the need to protect the human rights of people subjected to medical research, ethics committees are now faced with new ethical dilemmas about how to protect potential participants from psychological and social risks. In negotiating new territory in ethical social research, committees and researchers alike may fail to identify all the risks to participants and other social justice concerns. This article argues the value of social work skills and social worker involvement in the review process and in educating the research community in the need for sensitivity in negotiating and conducting research with people, particularly those of marginalised populations.
