This article reflects on the challenges encountered while assessing refugee survivors of torture and trauma and the approaches used in dealing with our clients at the Torture Rehabilitation and Network Service ACT (TRANSACT). It also presents an outline of the theoretical model of the rehabilitation process for survivors of torture and trauma developed by TRANSACT which ultimately guides the therapeutic approach. The main purpose of this paper is to share the TRANSACT experience, especially with those health professionals whose practice concerns work with refugees who may have been victims of torture and trauma. We wish to contribute to a better understanding of this particularly vulnerable client group's plight, and at the same time demonstrate how, with a sensitive approach, we can obtain information and effectively assist these clients without unintentionally contributing to existing anxiety. |
