Titel: A threat to social cohesion? a perspective of young vietnamese men living in Australia
Auteur: Barnes, Diane
Verschenen in: Australian social work
Paginering: Jaargang 51 (1998) nr. 2 pagina's 9-15
Jaar: 1998-06-01
Inhoud: This article contributes to the debate about whether principles of national identity, social cohesion and cultural diversity are compatible, by injecting research data on the perspective of people who have settled in this country as migrants and refugees. Qualitative interviews were conducted with eighty two young Vietnamese men several years after their arrival in Australia. The sources of satisfaction in their current lives and their aspirations for the future indicate that these young men are highly likely to contribute to, rather than detract from, the cohesiveness of Australian society. At a broader level, it is argued that social workers, through their grass roots contacts, are often in a unique position to make sure that policy debates are informed by the perspective of the 'subjects' of such debates.
