In this article, the authors describe a weekend group for 16 non-metropolitan birth parents, who had lost children to adoption. Over the two days, the group members participated in a series of exercises, as well as large and small group discussions. The group experience provided an opportunity for women to see themselves differently, to be able to acknowledge strengths and to challenge their oppressive story of shame, isolation, self blame and secrecy. Provision of an intensive weekend group enabled rural participants to experience some of the group benefits normally only available to residents of large cities. |
