Supervision is the cornerstone of the counselling process. It serves as a link between the counsellor, the client, and where applicable, the agency. The major purpose of supervision is to assist the counsellor to develop the skills and expertise necessary to ensure that clients receive an optimal level of service. If this goal is to be met, the supervision process must be a positive and effective experience. Although supervision is rewarding for many supervisors and counsellors, tension and dissatisfaction do occur and the supervision process can become restrained or blocked. In this paper, factors which can create tension and dissatisfaction, and so restrain or block the process, are outlined. The importance of addressing issues which might result in a negative experience of supervision is discussed, together with strategies for establishing a positive supervision relationship. Further strategies are suggested for those times when supervision is not proceeding smoothly and when the purpose of supervision is not being fulfilled.
