Inhoud: 'Practice Forum' is intended to provide a forum for social work practitioners to share their practice with others; to describe what they are doing and assess its effectiveness. We extend an invitation to all social work practitioners to submit articles for 'Practice Forum' and we look forward to receiving your contribution. The philosophical base of traditional social work theory and practice is influenced by modernist concepts of people and their social world. This sometimes fails social workers when they face dilemmas in their work, for modernism cannot account for the range of responses workers find themselves making. The paper argues that ideas from postmodernism can provide a framework in which taken-for-granted ideas can be deconstructed and reworked. Social work intervention with a mother who murdered her young child provides an opportunity to examine some of the ideas that postmodernism embraces. These ideas can provide workers with a voice with which to express the inconsistencies and concerns they experience when dealing with extraordinary events.
