'Practice Forum' is intended to provide a forum for social work practitioners to share their practice with others; to describe what they are doing and assess its effectiveness. We extend an invitation to all social work practitioners to submit articles for 'Practice Forum' and we look forward to receiving your contribution. The author's involvement in running a group for foremen facing redundancy is documented. The aim was to provide information, support and the opportunity for members to explore common issues and anxieties surrounding retrenchment. This proved to be untenable as the men were not prepared to discuss personal issues in a group setting. Their work-place culture impacted strongly on group process, dynamics, content and outcome. The group was viewed as a tokenistic gesture by management to be seen to be doing something. Guidelines normally applied to community groups had to be discarded and the focus needed to be on practical skills such as resume writing and interview technique. Recom- mendations for running this type of group include the need for prior consultation with potential group members, the rescheduling of work-loads to enable attendance and clear communication/consultation procedures between management and the workforce. |
