Inhoud: This biographical article surveys the life of Edna Chamberlain, Emeritus Professor of Social Work, Queensland University. A study of Professor Chamberlain's life and work reflects some central themes in the history of social work in Australia, from its growth as a profession to questions of theory and practice. Professor Chamberlain was the first woman appointed as professor in the field of social work in Australia. She has become something of a role model for younger women entering social work. She came from a working-class Brisbane family, studied and worked extensively in Australia and North America and became Head of Social Work at Queensland University in 1973. Under her direction the department grew and generated considerable research. Professor Chamberlain was strongly concerned to develop social work education at a national and international level, particularly within the Asian-Pacific region. She retired in July 1986 and was awarded the Order of Australia in 1988.
